I just got off the phone with Senator Richard Burr’s DC Office. My reason for contacting him this morning is because I discovered a couple of days ago that he is a Co-Sponsor of this legislation.
I talked with one of his staffers and the gentleman was very informed and provided me with a little education.
The reason that Burr is a Co-Sponsor is because it enables him to have more input & power concerning this legislation. The staffer also informed me that it IS the House Version of the bill that has all of the BAD STUFF in it and that Burr’s office doesn’t even consider the House Version to be a companion bill.
I specifically inquired about local farmers…. and for example:
Farmer Brown has a small local farm & sells his eggs, fruits & vegetables to the local community folks. According to the staffer, in this scenario, Farmer Brown is EXEMPT from inspections & mandates that would put him out of business.
I have read several blogs / articles concerning this legislation and all the Rave about it seems to be from the House Bill, not the Senate version. Of course, just look at some of it’s Co-Sponsors. (ie. Charlie Rangel)
I also took the time to peruse S-510, & no I didn’t read it in it’s entirety, but I did notice that most of the senate bill is focused on “Imported Food Items“. I’m still not real fond of the powers that it gives to the HHS Secretary, but I do feel better about this after talking w/ Burr’s office.
