Not sure, but I did find this little tidbit of info.

“On 1 March 1955, four grades of Specialist were established: Specialist Third Class (E-4), Specialist Second Class (E-5), Specialist First Class (E-6), and Master Specialist (E-7).”

And it appears there is another small error in the DC story. Speer was a Sergeant First Class (SFC), not “Specialist First Class”. Here’s the Wiki page for Chris Speer.
